Melbourne - Queen Victoria Markets

Melbourne is home to many markets, including the legendary Queen Victoria Market, an institution since 1878. Choose from fresh produce, seafood, jewellery, clothing and authentic Australian souvenirs.

The Queen Victoria Market is more than just Melbourne’s shopping Mecca - this 19th century market is a historic landmark, a tourist attraction, and an institution for all Melburnians. The ‘Queen Vic’ was opened in 1878, but the meat market building (except the Victorian façade) operated from 1866.

The area where the back open-air sheds stand used to be Melbourne’s first cemetery. Over the years, the market has been a wholesale fruit and vegetable market, and has gone through various expansions and changes reflecting the shopping habits of the growing Melbourne populace.

Fresh is the flavour of the market. More than fresh seafood and fresh fruits and vegetables, the market also takes a fresh approach. Find clothing, baggage, toys, jewellery, new-age products and souvenirs at sinful prices.

The complex of enclosed food halls, open sheds, shops and stores illustrate the variety of Melbourne culture through its produce whilst maintaining a vibrant sense of how a 19th century market functioned.

There is plenty of general merchandise available including fashion items at reasonable prices, souvenirs for international and interstate visitors, plus everything from suitcases to saucepans. The sounds of buskers and entertainers are part of the atmosphere and on Sundays one of the streets is sealed off to traffic allowing pedestrians to wander at will between all sections of the market whilst enjoying a mouth watering array of casual food and a variety of live entertainment.

The Suzuki Night Market:  Unfortunately, the night market closed on the 28 February 2007.

For the ultimate night out, Queen Victoria Market is the place to be every Wednesday evening from November 30 2005 to March 22 2006 (except 28th December 2005). The Suzuki Night Market is back with its eclectic vibe locals have come to love. Be tantalised by over 200 stalls including world food, bars and quirky shopping – and be entertained throughout the night by some of the best music acts in Melbourne. With roving performers, tarot readers and Shiatsu massage all under the one roof, The Suzuki Night Market really is where the weird and wonderful come out at night!
